Tab autocomplete is not the same as agent mode. Autocomplete predicts your next lines as you type. Agents read the repo and edit multiple files. Claude Code has no Tab model at all — it is agent-only.

The practical question is whether suggestions appear fast enough to keep flow, and predict your next edit correctly enough that you accept them instead of typing. This guide compares tools that actually do inline completion, explains how Tab models work under the hood, and gives configuration snippets you can copy today.

Autocomplete quality depends on context window (how much surrounding code the model sees) and indexing (whether the tool understands your whole repo or just the open file). The best Tab experience feels invisible: you think about the logic, and the editor fills in the boilerplate before you finish the thought.

The three layers of a Tab product

Every serious autocomplete tool stacks three layers:

  1. Model — a code-specialized LLM trained for fill-in-the-middle (FIM) prediction
  2. Context assembly — what gets sent to the model (open file, imports, index hits, recent edits)
  3. Client UX — ghost text rendering, partial accepts, debouncing, and latency masking

Weakness in any layer shows up as wrong suggestions, slow ghost text, or suggestions that ignore your project's conventions.

How Tab models work technically

Fill-in-the-middle (FIM)

Most code Tab models are not plain "predict the next token" language models. They use fill-in-the-middle (FIM) training: the model sees code before the cursor (prefix), code after the cursor (suffix), and must generate the missing middle.

Context beats raw speed on large files. A 150ms suggestion that ignores your project's types is worse than a 250ms suggestion that imports correctly.

Cursor Tab and Windsurf lean on repo indexing — embeddings or symbol graphs that pull relevant definitions without you opening every file. Copilot uses lighter workspace hints (open tabs, related files). Continue lets you configure exactly what goes in.

editor.inlineSuggest.enabled must stay true — disabling it kills ghost text for all inline providers, not just Cursor.

Partial Accepts workflow

Partial Accepts is the feature power users rely on most. When Tab suggests a 12-line block and only the first 4 lines are correct:

  1. Ghost text appears for the full suggestion
  2. Press Partial Accept (Cmd+→ on Mac, Ctrl+→ on Windows/Linux) to accept one line
  3. Repeat until the suggestion diverges, then keep typing

Without Partial Accepts, you either accept the whole block (and undo) or reject everything and type manually. On multi-line Tab, Partial Accepts often doubles effective accept rate.

GitHub Copilot — deep dive

The default autocomplete for millions of developers. Copilot Inline completes as you type; Copilot Next Edit Suggestions (NES) predicts the next place you will edit, not just the cursor position.

Disable Copilot on file types where suggestions are noise (yaml, json config, markdown) via the enable map.

Copilot Next Edit Suggestions (NES)

NES is Copilot's answer to multi-line and cross-location Tab. Instead of only completing at the cursor, NES:

  1. Watches your recent edits and cursor movement
  2. Predicts the next logical edit location (another line, another function, even another file)
  3. Shows a jump suggestion — press Tab to jump there and see the completion
